Swinney optimistic after Tigers' scrimmage

CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Dabo Swinney said he was pleased with what he saw at Clemson's first stadium scrimmage of 2014 on Saturday.

"We have had a tough last four days of practice and the team has worked hard," the head football coach said. "We have made it hard for them during this period. This is a veteran team who has demonstrated they can meet a challenge."

Swinney noted that he was particularly impressed with the performances by tight ends, running backs, and the individual showings from Cole Stoudt and Deshaun Watson.

"The biggest disappointment was that we had too many penalties," Swinney said." Demarre Kitt made perhaps the best play of the day on one catch, but it was wiped out by a penalty."

Travis Blanks, Sam Cooper, Tyshon Dye, Kellen Jones, Shaq Lawson and Charone Peake did not play due to injuries.

The Tigers will face 12th ranked Georgia in the season-opener in Athens on August 30.

Practices resume on Monday.
