GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Greer man said he feels lucky to be alive after being trapped under a collapsed bridge in his car Saturday night.

It happened on Memorial Drive Extension in Greer during torrential rains, which caused a culvert under a bridge to overflow and weaken the ground under the road. The road collapsed, causing two cars to fall into a hole.

"I guess I just feel lucky," said Richard Cooper, who survived the ordeal. He said he was stuck for more than an hour as rescue crews tried to get him out. "The ground was washed completely away, and the car weight made it collapse even more and more."

Crews said that portion of Memorial Drive Extension will be closed until further notice.
