PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Pickens Elementary School teacher took home the top honor of teacher of the year at the school district's award ceremony.

Nikki Miller is a reading coach at the school and received $500 cash prize sponsored by Southern Wesleyan University.

"She realizes that her mission is to make an impact on all students, and not just the ones she teaches," said Allen Fain, Pickens Elementary School principal. "It's her goal to help other teachers develop their craft, and many times throughout the year other teachers have requested to visit her in order to learn something new."

At Friday's back-to-school kick-off event held at Pickens High, the district also named Jennifer Ohlrogge the support employee of the year. She is an ISS instructor at Gettys Middle School and received a $250 cash prize.

Students return to class in Pickens County on Tuesday.
