JPSO: Parents OD on heroin with children in back seat

Two young children were in the back seat of a car when their parents overdosed on heroin in Metairie, police say. Officers say that the couple admitted to having a $200 a day heroin addiction.

According to Col. John Fortunato with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department, the man and woman were unconscious as a result of over-dosing on heroin.

Concerned citizens notified police around 2:24 p.m. after finding the couple inside of a car near the intersection of Bonnabel Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Highway in Metairie. EMS technicians arriving on the scene found a man and a woman suffering from some type of medical issue inside of a 2014 Toyota Camry.

Their two children, an 11-month-old and 4-year-old, were located in the backseat of the vehicle, police say. Investigators say they found a small amount of heroin inside of the vehicle.

Upon questioning the couple, officers say they both admitted to injecting heroin earlier in the day.

The children were removed from the vehicle and taken to a nearby hospital for observation. They were treated and released into the custody of their grandparents, police say.

Michael Pierce, 41, and Melanie Pierce, 34, were arrested. They have been booked with one count each of possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor and child endangerment.

After being placed under arrest, both suspects allegedly admitted to police that they each have a $200 a day heroin addiction.
