4-year-old dies after accidental shooting

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 4-year-old Clarksville boy is dead after a handgun accident Sunday.

Police said the boy grabbed the loaded weapon and accidentally shot himself in the chest.

The accident occurred about 6 p.m. at a home on Arthurs Court.

The boy was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Neighbors were left speechless after seeing the large effort to save the young boy.

"I'm heartbroken about what happened and I'm just beyond words," neighbor Murit Emory said. "I can't even describe someone losing a child like that."

Emory is a veteran who has also lost a child. He said his heart goes out to the family and he hopes everyone with guns will take caution.

"If you're going to have a gun and you have kids, please leave it unloaded and keep them locked up in a safe away from children," Emory said.

This is the second accidental gun death involving a child in just one week. Last Sunday, Karl Hills, 7 of White County, found a gun at his grandparents' house and accidentally fired it.

Clarksville police have decided not to comment on this latest incident. They have turned the investigation over to the Department of Children's Service.

Police would not say if any charges are pending, but a DCS spokesperson said an investigation is ongoing.
