Metro Police open Midtown Hills precinct

Posted: Updated:

The Metro Police Department officially opened its new Midtown Hills precinct on 12th Avenue South Monday.

Many in the 12 South neighborhood hope the new precinct will help resolve some of the petty crime problems that persist in the area.

Less than a month ago, 12 South resident Lizzy Campbell and her roommate came home from a business trip to find their home in shambles. Not only had they been robbed, but the people who did it made themselves at home.

"They went through lemonade, Gatorade, water, made some soup," Campbell said

The Midtown Hills precinct has area homeowners breathing a sigh of relief.

"The house got broken into twice in one year," Belmont student Shannon McLaughlin said. "We had a few things stolen, so it's nice to have them in the area and feel relieved about being in a safe environment."

The precinct went online early Saturday with officers reporting for duty. Mayor Karl Dean and Police Chief Steve Anderson hosted a grand opening ceremony Monday.

"Look around you at all of the continued growth," Anderson said. "The Midtown precinct is going to serve as a catalyst to that growth."

The precinct will serve three major universities, including Vanderbilt, Belmont, and David Lipscomb University, as well as neighborhoods stretching from Crieve Hall and the Nippers Corner area.

"Having them in the backyard is a really good thing for us," said Bob Fisher, Belmont University president. "It's good for all the people here in the neighborhood."

The new Midtown Hills precinct will have a 2,000-square-foot community room that will be available to community groups on a first come, first served basis.

The office will be led by Commander Kay Lokey.
