MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A woman who is often referred to as the "Matriarch of the Voting Rights Movement" is celebrating her 103rd birthday Monday.

Dr. Amelia Boynton-Robinson is a living historic icon of the contemporary civil rights era. She, along with Congressman John Lewis (D-Georgia) were among a group of activists beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on what came to be known as 'Bloody Sunday'.

On Monday, August 18 Dr. Boynton-Robinson celebrated her birthday with friends and family at the Jackson Hospital-Noland Floor.
