GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A social experiment to see if people would pay for a drink if no one was watching the stand concluded that people in Greenville are considered honest.

Honest Tea conducted the national experiment asking people to weigh in on whether or not they think others are honest.

According to the National Honesty Index, the results revealed 95 percent of Americans were considered honest.

Honest Tea set up unstaffed stands with their tea offered at $1 at 60 locations across the country. The beverages were available on the honor system while it was observed to see who would pay for the drinks or steal, making note of things like gender, hair color and more.

Through the company's experiment, they said women were more honest than men (95 v. 93 percent).

The most honest states were Hawaii, Alabama, Alaska, Tennessee and South Carolina while the least honest states were Montana, Idaho, Minnesota and Rhode Island - which came in at 83 percent honest.

There were 61 test cites included in the experiment in all 50 states plus Washington, DC.

Greenville's experiment was held at Noma Square on Main Street on July 26 and helped propel the Upstate city to tie for fifth nationally, with 96 percent of people who participated being honest.

Greenville was the only South Carolina city included in Honest Tea's experiment.
