Differing stories in incident involving Jonesville mayor

Posted: Updated:

There are two differing stories in an incident that occurred Wednesday morning at the Jonesville Post Office involving Mayor Ernest Moore and resident Joey Stepp.

According to a report from the Union County Sheriff's Office, Stepp accused the mayor of assaulting him in the parking lot of the post office while the two were both taking care of their mail.

Stepp told FOX Carolina that Moore "had a pocket knife in his hand, he was making racial remarks.  And like a wild man, he came after me."

Stepp said he was attacked and scratched.  He also said a medical device he uses for pain relief was broken in the scuffle with Moore.

Moore, however, told FOX Carolina that Stepp is a liar.

"I didn't touch him," he said.  "I didn't raise a hand against him."

Stepp said the bad blood between him and Moore stems from a property dispute going on between the town and himself.  Stepp said the incident Wednesday turned the dispute personal.

No charges have yet been filed in the case.  Union County deputies said the case has been referred to SLED.
