Valdosta hopes experience in on their side

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta Wildcats want to get back to their spot among state title contenders. The Cats believe they have the experience to make a run in 2014.

After a 6-5 season in 2013, the Wildcats graduated a small senior class.

Among them were big time playmakers on each side of the ball, like Darius Sapp, Alex Cason, and Malcolm Joseph.

But head coach Rance Gillespie feels good about the guys he has coming back, since many of them have a lot of meaningful game experience.

He says having that kind of foundation is a good place to start, but adds being experienced doesn't necessarily equal positive results.

"The leadership changes every year. You've got to step up and do the things on a day to day basis, and you've got to focus on the process of getting better each and every day," Gillespie says. "So just because we've got people back doesn't automatically make us a good football team. We've got to go earn that every day."

The Cats open the 2014 season Saturday when they take on Brookwood at the annual Corky Kell Classic.

That game is at 2:45 p.m. at McEachern High School. It will be aired live on Fox Sports South.
