Restaurants offering big perks for fantasy football draft parties

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The battle is on for restaurants to land big-spending fantasy football draft parties. The number of enticements being offered by bars and restaurants hoping to attract business is growing increasingly competitive.

A group gathered at the Twin Peaks restaurant off Camelback Road and 22nd Street in Phoenix Friday night for their own draft party, drawn by the perks and proximity of the restaurant.

Ironically, it was the same group CBS5 profiled in a story last year about the emerging fantasy football market and its effect on the restaurant business.

League commissioner John Palermo brought his group back to Twin Peaks for a second straight year.

"There were some pretty enticing packages at some of the competition," Palermo said.

The group had considered Tilted Kilt to host their draft party.

"We have free Wi-Fi, we have the Internet. A draft board for us," Palermo said.

"We have seven parties going on right now ranging from eight people to 25," said Twin Peaks owner Carolyn Vangelos.

The restaurant is on track to host well over 100 fantasy football draft parties this season. They held 92 last year. Saturday alone, they are expecting 17 groups.

"We supply the board, the stickers, you get a goodie bag," Vangelos said.

Twin Peaks customers are also given free chips and queso dip, coupons for use throughout the football season and use of a big screen TV if they want to project their laptop computer onto the monitor.

Buffalo Wild Wings, for instance, is attracting draft parties by offering them a draft board and stickers, free food vouchers and coasters, among other things.

Hooters also offers merchandise and coupon books to customers.

"Some of the bigger names the chain restaurants that do draft parties, you hear their commercials and you know you've just gotta be one up on them," Vangelos said.
