Social media is playing a role in a Nashville man's fight for life.

Matt Rizor remains at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after being injured in a hit-and-run in the early morning hours of Aug. 16.

In a digital age, it did not take long for many to start funding Rizor's medical care.

"People just keep sharing it and posting it," said Brinn Black, a close friend of Rizor and his fiancee.

They're sharing Rizor's GoFundMe page, a site dedicated to crowdfunding and fundraising.

Friends hatched the idea in Rizor's hospital room just hours after he was hit.

"Anything at this point to just be able to help them, take some of the financial burden," Black said. "Obviously we probably won't be able to get all of them, but we'll be able to cut a big chunk out of them hopefully. Make sure when Matt wakes up he doesn't have to worry about working."

So far, the campaign has raised almost $16,000.

Black said Rizor is still in a coma but is slowly starting to improve. She said he knows about the campaign.

"He's raised up his arm and reached for our hand and squeezed it really hard, so that's been great," Black said.

A car hit Rizor on West End Avenue near 17th Avenue. He was not in the crosswalk.

Witnesses reported seeing a black or blue four-door sedan traveling east on West End without headlights. The vehicle hit Rizor.

Police added evidence that shows the car has a damaged windshield and headlight.

Black said the campaign has spread to many across the country and helped raise hundreds in donations from friends and total strangers.

"I don't think somebody, just because they've been a victim of someone else's awful decision, needs to suffer like that," she said. "So we're just really excited when he wakes up to show him how much people love him."

Rizor was hit a year to the day from his wedding day. A benefit is in the works for this October.
