Sexual assault reported in Vanderbilt dorm

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A female student reported she was sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance in a Vanderbilt University residence hall on the Commons on Saturday night, according to an email sent by university police.

The email said no further details are known.

The email did not state whether the suspect has been arrested or if he was a student at Vanderbilt..

Vanderbilt freshmen Mary McDowell and Danielle Corker said they are still adjusting to the pace of campus life. But a message sent out to students regarding the reported sexual assault has been a scary introduction to college.

The notice sent by police read:

"Residential Housing staff received a report that a female student was sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance in a residence hall on the Commons on the night of August 23rd. No further details are known at this time."

The email included the university's sexual misconduct policy, links to the campus police department and links to The Project Safe Center and the Psychological and Counseling Center.

This report comes a year after four former Vanderbilt football players were accused of raping an unconscious woman in a campus dorm.
