Who is destroying campaign signs in Newberry County?

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Vandals have gone political in Newberry County where Sheriff Lee Foster says over 150 campaign signs in the county are being damaged.

Police say in some cases signs were destroyed right in front of people's homes. They say from the looks of things a sharp knife-like object was used to cut the signs apart.

Foster says several campaign signs belonging to Rep. Walt McLeod have been destroyed around the town of Newberry.

"Somebody had to plan and orchestrate this and just go through," said Foster. "and there's no rhyme or reason. It's not on one particular road. It's on numerous roads, so it was unfortunately geared towards one person."

In fact, Foster says, one of the signs appears to have been damaged by someone with a saw. The sheriff's department says at least three of the larger signs were targeted by vandals.

In response, Foster says, he's asking his deputies to be on the lookout for possible suspects in this case.

In all, there were reports of damaged signs going from Newberry to Whitmire and all the way down to the Saluda County line.

The sheriff also adds that McLeod's competitor, Rick Martin, has also reported several of his signs were damaged earlier in the campaign.
