SALEM, OR (KPTV/AP) -

The man who made headlines by being Miley Cyrus' date turned himself into jail on Thursday night.

Polk County Sheriff Bob Wolfe says Jesse Helt posted the required 10 percent of his $25,000 bail and was released just after 9 p.m.

Wolfe says it was unclear where he got the money to post the bail.

The young homeless man who accompanied Cyrus to the MTV Video Music Awards had a warrant out for his arrest in Oregon.

Court records show 22-year-old Helt was arrested on charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass in 2010, when he was 18 years old According to court records, Helt and an accomplice tried to break into an apartment on Taybin Road in Salem because the man who lived there had been selling him bad marijuana.

Their plan, the court documents allege, was to break the window, enter the apartment and steal any remaining marijuana. But police said Helt told them they couldn't get the window open after breaking it, so they left the apartment, leaving behind about $167 in damage.

Helt and the other suspect were arrested in that case, but his latest arrest warrant was issued in November of 2011 after he violated probation. Parole and probation officers said he failed to report as directed, failed to abide by a curfew, failed to complete community service and failed to report for drug testing.

At some point after his arrest, Helt moved to Los Angeles and tried to find work as a model. He gained worldwide attention on Sunday when Cyrus let him accept her award for Video of the Year. He used the platform to call attention to the issue of youth homelessness.

A woman who did not want to be identified said her son was friends with Helt and told Fox 12 he was a good kid who just made a stupid mistake several years ago.

"I think he has a lot of potential and just needs people to believe in him and someone to take the time to help him and be a mentor," neighbor Deborah Evans said, adding that Helt once job-shadowed her and showed interest in becoming a teacher. "He's a smart man with a big heart."

At her West Salem home, Helt's mother hinted that her son's legal troubles may soon be over thanks to his newfound celebrity friend, but did not want to comment on her son's current situation or his whereabouts.

The coverage about Helt's wanted status in Oregon caught the attention of Cyrus on Twitter earlier this week.

"The media never fails to disappoint," her account said. "You've chosen to go after Jesse instead of covering the issue of youth homelessness :("

She asked her Twitter followers to ignore the obsession over "one homeless man's legal issue" and help the other 1.6 million homeless youth.
