CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

An endangered female Brazilian Tapir calf is now on display at the Metro Richmond Zoo.

The calf was born on July 29, but just explored her exhibit for the first time on August 22. The calf and her parents, Pershing and Pico, will remain on display daily at the zoo's South American exhibit.

"Pershing and the baby had been kept off exhibit in their holding area to allow time for the baby to bond with mom and to grow stronger," according to a statement from the zoo.

The tapirs do have access to indoor shelters, so they might not always be visible to visitors. They also tend most active in the morning and evenings, if you're planning on making a trip.
