Democrat Ruben Gallego won Arizona's bitterly contested 7th Congressional District primary on Tuesday.

Gallego will succeed longtime Rep. Ed Pastor in Washington. He is retiring after two decades of service in the nation's capital.

"We did it because we have a unified vision of what we see AriZona should be going to - that's a better Arizona," Gallego said shortly after his win.

Gallego faces no Republican opposition in November's election.

The 34-year-old Gallego survived a tough challenge from onetime Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.

He is the son of Hispanic immigrants who was the first in his family to go to college. He later served in Iraq.

Gallego campaigned on curtailing the rising cost of college education, making sure veterans get timely health care and improving the lives of the poor.

The full slate of GOP candidates for the post was:

  • Randy Camacho, educator and author.
  • Rebecca Dewitt, Americans Eelect write-in candidate.
  • Ruben Gallego, former state representative.
  • Jarrett Maupin, reverend and community advocate
  • Mary Rose Wilcox, one-time Maricopa County supervisor.
  • Joe Cobb, Libertarian

The district includes much of Phoenix and Glendale.
