New Nashville DA Funk fires 5 attorneys on first day

Posted: Updated:

Five attorneys and two staff members were fired on new Nashville District Attorney Glenn Funk's first day on the job Friday.

A Davidson County judge swore in a room full of assistant DAs Friday afternoon, but there were several notable faces missing from the crowd.

Those who were fired were escorted out of the building by security guards Friday morning.

Earnie Hickerson was one of them. He has been an assistant DA in Juvenile Court for 21 years.

"No explanation whatsoever, no notice whatsoever," Hickerson said. "I was carrying approximately two-thirds of the caseload in Juvenile Court. There were only three DAs in that office. I had more experience in juvenile than the other two combined."

Karen Fentress came out of the office trying to hold back tears.

Also terminated Friday morning were domestic violence giants Hugh Ammerman, Sarah Davis and Sarah Beth Myers.

In his swearing-in ceremony, Funk vowed to crack down on domestic violence.

Funk would not talk to Channel 4 News Friday. He is having other assistant DAs come in throughout the holiday weekend to re-interview for their positions.

"It's my understanding that, this is just what I've heard, that there are 10 or 11 people at least who are going to be in the same fate as I am," Hickerson said.
