Greenville natives film new web series called 'The Girl From Carolina'

GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A new web series written, produced by and starring Greenville natives just wrapped up filming in and around Greenville Labor Day weekend.

The creators of The Girl From Carolina call it a "redneck film noir," featuring a main character who solves mysteries each online episode as she schemes and gets into trouble of her own.

The crew is from the Upstate, and they use the show to delve into the humor of stereotypes, using familiar locations and vernacular, to introduce characters who aren't always seen in media today.

Breanna Foister stars in the web series she co-wrote. Now living in New York, she's thrilled to film back home in Greenville.

"My character, I mean, is one that I don't see a lot in films. I don't see a lot on TV shows. We like the Southern humor and the dialect and the Southern terms of phrase that we use. We like using this wide and beautiful landscape as a setting. So those were all driving factors," said Foister.

What started as a 20 minute film-short, The Girl From Carolina has been written and shot as a 10-episode web series. As a low-budget independent project, the regional crew, lead by Alex Wroten, Joe Worthen and Foister, who now live in L.A. and New York, rely on volunteers to help with filming, plus local location donations.

Wroten said he wanted to shoot the show, which is set in South Carolina, in South Carolina.

"It's just so much of an overhead and hassle to bring people from other places, and truthfully after this experience, sort of realizing that although the community is smaller than a place like Los Angeles, it's no less talented," said Wroten.

Wroten says he can't wait to see the words he's written come to life as his cast takes ownership and the project becomes bigger than he planned.

The crew filmed over about two weeks at Independent Public Ale House on Poinsett Street, plus Substation II in Greer, and many of the scenes were shot on the property of the Albino Skunk Festival in Greer.

"Obviously, our target audience is anyone with an internet connection; however, because this is so locally specific and specific to the place where we all grew up, so we want to share it first and foremost with everyone else in this community who we think will understand and appreciate the wacky humor," said Foister.

The Girl from Carolina is expected to be edited and released online by the spring or summer of 2015.
