MILLS RIVER, NC (FOX Carolina) -

North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that they are investigating a fatal wreck near Mills River on Tuesday.

The accident was reported on Boylston Highway just after 6 p.m. The roadway was shut down while troopers investigated.

The victim was identified as Joseph Slater of Mills River, according to the highway patrol.

Investigators said Slater was struck head-on by a pickup that crossed the center line, and then he was struck from behind by a car.

Troopers said the first head-on accident created a chain reaction crash involving a total of three cars.

The truck that crossed the center line and hit Slater ran off the road and rolled. That driver was not seriously injured, according to investigators.

The highway patrol said charges are pending.
