King William man charged in Powhatan assault

Posted: Updated:

The Powhatan Sheriff's Office charged a King William man with malicious wounding in connection with an assault on Labor Day.

At 11:30 p.m. on September 1, Powhatan authorities received a call from a family member of Gordon Atkeison of King William, requesting a check on his welfare. While responding to that call, another call came in regarding an assault in the 1800 block of Manakintown Ferry Road.

Powhatan deputies arrived on the scene of the assault and found a victim with multiple lacerations. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the Powhatan Sheriff's Office said. The victim was released from the hospital following treatment.

Atkeison, 32, of King William, had left the scene before deputies arrived. Powhatan deputies and canine units were assisted by Virginia State Police in the search for Atkeison, who was found about a mile from the crime scene, authorities said.

Atkeison's arraignment and bond hearing were scheduled for Wednesday.
