GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A 62-year-old Gaffney man died in a house fire Thursday, unable to get out of the blaze as his son ran for help, according to the coroner.

The fire was reported on the 600 block of Shelby Highway late Thursday afternoon.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Michael David Upchurch and his son were inside the single-story, wood-frame home when the fire was noticed on the front porch about 5:20 p.m.

Fowler said Upchurch's son told his father the house was on fire as he saw flames run up a front porch post to the roof. He ran next door to call 911 because utilities had been disconnected to the house, but no one answered when he knocked, Fowler said.

As he ran back towards the house, the fire engulfed the home, Fowler said.

A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper passing by stopped when he saw the fire and radioed it in.

Upchurch was found just outside the front door on the porch after firefighters had the fire under control, according to Fowler.

An autopsy will be performed Saturday to determine his cause of death, which was the third fire death in the county so far in 2014.

The Cherokee County fire investigation team and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating the blaze at this time.
