CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Teresa Cothran said the recent death of Clemson sophomore Tucker Hipps brought back the painful memories of losing her own son.

Taylor Cothran was a freshman at the University of South Carolina in 2007 when investigators say he fell through his fifth-floor dorm room window. Taylor Cothran died several days later from his injuries.

Teresa Cothran, who has a daughter at Clemson, said she feels for the Hipps' loss.

"There is no way to prepare for that," Teresa Cothran said. "It comes out of nowhere, it's not supposed to happen."

Teresa Cothran said the road ahead for the Hipps family won't be easy.

"You struggle, we still struggle," Teresa Cothran said. "But through the grace of God you can go on somehow."

Tara Cothran, a senior at Clemson, said when news broke of Hipps' death the feelings of losing her brother came back to the surface.

"I woke up sick to my stomach, thinking about another parent having to bury their child," Tara Cothran said.

Tara Cothran was among the hundreds of students that attended a vigil for Hipps on Tuesday.

"We really mourn things as a group. This is something that hit home for all of us," Tara Cothran said.

The Cothrans said one thing that has helped them deal with their loss is focusing their energy on a charity they started in Taylor Cothran's honor.

Taylor's Helping Hands provides care packages for families with loved ones in ICU's across the area. The charity also offers all kinds of support for families during times of loss.

Teresa Cothran said after her son's death USC made a number of changes to prevent anymore accidents like the one that killed her son. Cothran says she hopes Clemson does the same once the investigation into Hipps' death is complete.

"When you're sending your money, your trust and my child is going there...just make it safe," Teresa Cothran said.
