Thousands attend Tucker Hipps' visitation

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - Family and friends gathered at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Greenville County to pay respects to Tucker Hipps. Investigators found Hipps' body Monday afternoon and said he died from a head injury consistent with at least a 20-foot fall.

However, on Friday, those who loved him and even strangers gathered to celebrate his life during a visitation service. Large groups of young people as well as adults walked through the doors of the funeral home. Many of them hugged, cried and held hands.

"From the time I met him, he stole my heart with his big smile and beautiful eyes," said Nancy Marchbanks, Hipps' former teacher. "He was just an all-around awesome kid."

Those grieving also showed their love by wearing orange. Hipps was a sophomore at Clemson University and for several days Clemson students and others decided to wear the school's color in a show of solidarity in honor of him.

Those who knew Hipps well said he lit up a room with his smile and his humor. Hipps was also a member of the Palmetto Boys' State organization. Many members also attended the visitation to show their support.

There were others who said they didn't know Hipps well, but said he made a point to make them feel special even with just a simple hello.

"He made that big of an impact  on everyone, it wasn't just me. Even if he barely knew you, he made it a point to make you feel like he did. So, he just did that for everybody," Hannah Cassell said.

A funeral service for Hipps will be held Sunday, at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley. The service will start at 2 p.m.
