BLACKSBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Highway Patrol is investigating a crash on I-85 in Cherokee County that killed a woman from Georgia.

Troopers said Mitzi McNeil, 51, was driving in a car that ran off the side of the road and overturned several times on the interstate around 4:20 p.m. Sunday near Blacksburg.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said McNeil was ejected and thrown nearly 50 feet from the vehicle. She died while undergoing surgery at the hospital two hours later, according to Fowler.

Fowler said McNeil was from Snellville and that she and the driver were on the way back from a conference and headed to Maryland. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
