SLED now assisting in Clemson student death probe

Posted: Updated:
CLEMSON, SC (AP) - The State Law Enforcement Division is now assisting in the investigation into the death of a Clemson University student found dead in Lake Hartwell last month.

Area media outlets report SLED has assigned an agent to the probe into the death of 19-year-old Tucker Hipps.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry says the agency is assisting but that the Oconee County Sheriff's Department is still the lead agency. He says supporting local agencies is part of SLED's mission.

An autopsy shows Hipps died of a head injury consistent with falling more than 20 feet from a bridge onto rocks at the edge of the lake. Authorities say he was out with fraternity brothers on an early morning run at the time of his death on Sept. 22.
