GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Law enforcement, fire and rescue, paramedics, hospital staff and medical students tested their skills when facing an emergency on Friday.

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and Greenville Health System hosted the third annual community emergency preparedness exercise at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The exercises test the readiness of emergency responders through realistic simulations of life threatening events, organizers said.

Organizers said the exercises use actors, props, emergency sirens, pyrotechnics, simulated gunfire, and other elements to make the scenarios as realistic as possible to “replicate the stress and intensity of real disasters and give students an appreciation for the skills they will use as first responders and future physicians.”

The annual event was created by Dr. Thomas Blackwell, who directs the School of Medicine's EMT training program.

"EMT training provides students with basic clinical skills but also teaches them how to work as part of a healthcare team and how to communicate with patients, families and colleagues in tense situations," Blackwell said. "The full-scale emergency operations exercise tests these competencies and serves as invaluable training for our students as well as local emergency and law enforcement agencies."

The emergency training drills run from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and may cause traffic pattern changes at the Greenville Memorial Hospital campus.
