 Leading up to and on Nov. 11, Americans will pay tribute to veterans and their service to the nation. The western Carolinas are no exception as parades and other events will be held to honor local veterans.

Veterans Day Events

Tuesday Nov. 11

  • Veterans Day Program at Anderson County Alternative School: At 8 a.m. located at 805 E Whitner St., sponsored by VFW Post 6089 and the Ladies Auxiliary of 6089
  • Bell's Crossing Elementary - Simpsonville: Veterans Day Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in school's cafeteria 
  • D.R. Middle School in Lyman: Veterans Day program in the gym at 8:30 a.m.. Everyone is encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
  • Veterans Day Celebration - Taylors: From 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Taylors Elementary School 
  • Operation Remembrance: A walk to honor the men and women who served in our nation's military. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at McCormick Field in Asheville.
  • Sevier Middle School's 18th annual Veteran's Day Ceremony - Greenville: "Return to Camp Sevier" honors veterans, school's site as WWI training camp. Ceremony starts at 10 a.m. but veterans invited to speak with students as early as 8:30 a.m. 
  • Greenville Co. Veterans Day Ceremony - Greenville: Greenville County and the Greenville Joint Veterans Council host the 10 a.m. ceremony in front of the monument at Greenville County Square. 
  • Union Co. Veterans Day Parade - Union: The parade will take place at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Union.
  • Asheville Veterans Day commemoration - Asheville: The ceremony begin at 11 a.m. at the Charles George VA Medical Center. 
  • GHS Veterans Day: A ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. outside the main entrance to Greenville Memorial Hospital. The community is invited to attend and bring items to donate to the Blue Star Mothers of the Upstate. 
  • Veterans Memorial dedication: 11 a.m. at Veterans Park in Pendleton
  • Berea High Veterans Day Program - Greenville: At 2:30 p.m. a program will honor veterans; public invited to attend.
  • Cascades at Verdae - Greenville: The retirement community will hold a Veterans Day celebration featuring music and tributes from 4 - 5 p.m. 
  • Sheriff National Guard Memorial Flag Plaza - Central: Patriotic ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. at the plaza, located on the corner of Clayton and Wesleyan drives, at Southern Wesleyan University.
  • Spartanburg Veterans Day Parade: From 4-6 p.m. starts at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and ends at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium
  • Greer Veterans Day: The city remembers a native son who died in France during World War II.  The flag that flew during Sgt. Nathan Jordan's burial will be flown at Greer City Hall.
  • Chick-Fil-A Honor Flight Fundraiser: From 3-7 p.m. Honor Flight veterans will be on hand to tell stories of both time in service and from their Honor Flights at the Fairview Road, Butler Road and Wade Hampton Boulevard locations.

Veterans Day Specials

  • Applebee's restaurants - Veterans with ID or in uniform will receive a free signature Thank You meal.
  • Carrabba's restaurants - All active and retired veterans receive a free appetizer at participating locations November 8th through November 11th, 2014. 
  • Come Hear Hearing Center - Free hearing aid cleanings for Veterans at the 210 West Stone Ave. location in Greenville.
  • FATZ Cafe - Show a military ID and enjoy a $12.99 entree credit.
  • Golden Corral restaurants - Golden Corral will have its annual Military Appreciation Monday on Nov. 17 where service members will receive a free 'thank you' dinner.
  • On The Border restaurant - Free "Create Your Own Combo" meal combination at the Greenville location at 74 Beacon Dr. available to veterans and active duty military personnel in uniform or with military ID. 
  • Palmetto Moonshine - 10 percent discount to veterans with a valid military ID at their Anderson, Pendleton and Myrtle Beach locations.
  • Red Robin restaurants - Free Red's Tavern Double burger with Bottomless Steak Fries to all veterans and active duty military at participating restaurants 
  • Shoney's restaurants - Free All-American Burger to veterans and troops, including at the 1000 Georgia Rd. location in Franklin, NC.
  • Sonny's BBQ restaurants - Veterans will receive 50 percent off their dine-in food purchase at all Sonny's locations including in Powdersville at 3540 Highway 153. 
  • Texas Roadhouse restaurants - Veterans with proof of military service will receive a free lunch from from a special Veterans Menu.
