Chiefs fan says Berry like him can beat lymphoma

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Chiefs fan Jason Sullivan is feeling closer to the team than ever before, especially to Eric Berry.

Sullivan says he can relate to the star's health issues after doctors found a mass in Berry's chest that could be lymphoma.

When he was just 22 years old, Sullivan said he began feeling tightness in his chest. Sullivan said he also had back pains, and he was often short of breath.

Then one day Sullivan was at the gym lifting weights that he realized something was seriously wrong.

"I did my two hour classic workout and when I was doing some late pull downs, I'd pull down and I'd feel this golfball-sized something pop over my collarbone," Sullivan said.

Doctors found a tumor the size of a football in the right side of Sullivan's chest.

He was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and endured nine months of chemo and radiation.

"My hair started to fall out, daily energy (was) at a very low level," he said.

Sullivan says Berry's athletic training, mental strength and support from fans will help the Chief's safety's fight.

"He's reached the pinnacle of the football world and is in the NFL. He certainly has mind over matter figured out and I do think that's a big part of beating cancer."

Sullivan has been cancer-free for 19 years. He spends his free time volunteering with the local Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, giving hope to others battling blood-related cancers.

Dr. Joseph McGuirk works at the University of Kansas Hospital where Berry was treated over the weekend. He is not treating Berry but is familiar with cases like his. He said it's rare for someone as young as Berry to have the disease, but said it's very treatable and Berry can return to play in the NFL.

"Possibly we look forward to seeing him on the field next fall," McGuirk said.
