SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

At Spartanburg's a "Dickens of a Christmas" downtown, people may have noticed more police officers than usual. The Spartanburg Police Department announced they've added three new members to the downtown bike unit.

"We just felt the need, with the city continuing to grow, especially the downtown area, we have new businesses arriving and starting up at the first of the year," said Timothy Suber, the bike unit's supervisor.

Suber said the unit initially started out with one officer patrolling downtown.

"With the addition of these officers, it's just to make them feel safer and we'll be better responsive to their needs," Suber said.

The officers were dressed in old English-style bobbies. Suber said the uniforms made them stand out and easy for the community to find them. Suber also said the addition of the officers will help build relationships between the officers and the citizens as well as making the ones they already have even stronger.
