GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Protesters gathered in downtown Greenville on Sunday afternoon to stage a “Die-In” along Main Street.

The demonstration began around 3:30 p.m. in front of the Peace Center.

Participants lied down on the pavement to simulate being dead.

The peaceful demonstration was “in support of justice for Eric Garner and in honor of lives lost to violence in the Upstate,” according to community activist Traci Fant.

Garner died after being placed in a chokehold by a New York police officer in July, 2014. On Dec. 3, 2014, a grand jury decided not to indict the officer involved in Garner's death.

The grand jury decision sparked several protests and “die-ins” across the country.

The sound of Garner saying "I can't breathe" was played on a loop during the Greenville protest.
