SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A mother has died and her twins are receiving treatment following a crash in Spartanburg County on Tuesday, according to the coroner's office.

Highway Patrol troopers said the crash occurred just after 1 p.m. on Skylyn Drive, near Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said 19-year-old Ashton Gailann Hughes, of Drayton, was driving from a hospital appointment with an 11-month-old child in the car when the collision occurred.

Troopers said the vehicle the woman and the child were in hit another vehicle stopped at a traffic light.

Clevenger said Hughes, who was pregnant with twins at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead later at Spartanburg Medical Center during surgery.

Both twins are alive and receiving treatment at the hospital, according to Clevenger.

Eric Hughes, Ashton's father, said the mother was able to see her newborn children before she passed away.

The 11-month-old was not injured, according to Clevenger.

The cause of death is under investigation.
