K9's tooth lodged into Greenville Co. woman's leg following arrest

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -  Greenville Co. deputies used a K9 to arrest a woman they said was resisting arrest after they responded to a domestic dispute involving her. The woman, who wished to not be identified, said the K9 bit so hard on her leg, that one of his teeth is now lodged into her flesh.

Deputies confirmed this, but said they reserve the right to use K9s in the event a suspect is resisting arrest.

The woman's boyfriend, Tavares Poole, said his brother called deputies to their home off Hunts Bridge Road Sunday morning after an argument with her. He claimed she assaulted him, and when deputies arrived, they said she holed herself up in her home and refused to comply with their requests that she show herself. Deputies then got the door open and allowed the K9 to enter the residence and arrest the woman.

She was charged with Criminal Domestic Violence and Resisting Arrest.

Her family, however, said they are furious at the protocol used during the arrest, saying using a dog went too far.
"She's in a lot of pain, she's still bleeding, the doctors are refusing to remove the tooth out of her leg for now. They said it's gonna do more harm than good if they remove it," said her sister, Samantha Wright.
Even the woman's boyfriend, who claimed he was assaulted that day, said deputies used excessive force.

"To me, they didn't have to bring the dogs in," said Tavares Poole. "They could have went in and got her instead of letting the dog grab her."

The family said they thought K9s were only used for drug busts. Greenville Co. Sheriff's spokesman Drew Pinciaro sent this statement to FOX Carolina saying ""K9s are not only used for narcotics searches, but for tracking (searching) suspects, and individuals who are resisting arrest."

They remind everyone that K9s can and may be used in the event a suspect is resisting arrest.
