SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies say thieves remain at large following a burglary that occurred at a Hindu temple in Spartanburg.

Spartanburg County deputies believe the crime happened between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on March 1 at the temple located on Fairview Church Road.

They said the suspects entered the church by breaking a back window, stealing less than $100 from the offering receptacle, a large ceremonial bell, and six other small ceremonial bells. A temple member told deputies the thieves also broke into an unlocked storage building but were unable to determine if anything had been stolen.

The burglars then cut a hole in a safe and removed $1,000 of cash, deputies said. According to deputies, investigators believe the suspects were familiar with the temple because another safe containing temple documents was never tampered with.

Keys to the temple were also stolen from a chest at the foot of the alter, deputies said.

Anyone with information on the burglary should call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
