GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Cherokee County coroner is investigating the drowning death of a man Wednesday night.

According to coroner Dennis Fowler, the drowning happened in a neighborhood pond near the victim’s residence on James Street in Gaffney.

According to witnesses, Odilo Ramirez went into the pond around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was attempting to swim to the opposite shore when he started yelling for help, Fowler said.

A passerby jumped in the water and attempted to help, but Ramirez disappeared under the water, Fowler said.

According to Fowler, Ramirez was wearing socks and sneakers, which absorbed water and apparently weighed him down.

Members of the Grassy Pond and CKC Volunteer Fire Departments recovered Ramirez’s body about 15 feet off shore around 9:45 p.m., Fowler said.

The coroner has ruled Ramirez’s death accidental.
