CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Clemson officials say police are investigating after a Confederate flag was hung on campus.

The flag was raised above a statue in front of Tillman Hall some time on Monday night. In another incident, a University spokesperson confirmed that Clemson's Tillman Hall was vandalized on Monday.

University officials received a report around noon Monday that Tillman Hall had been spray painted. The graffiti read "Tillman was a violent racist," "R.I.P. Sen. Coker," "Blacks must remain subordinate or be exterminated -Tillman", and "R.I.P. Sen. Pinckney."

Facility maintenance cleaned off the red spray paint.

Faculty, staff and students were off on Monday in observance of Independence Day.

University police are investigating both incidents.
