Funeral plans announced for 21-year-old drowning victim

LAKE HARTWELL, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Funeral plans have been announced for a college student who died from complications of drowning on Saturday night.

21-year-old Odell Gaither, a junior at University of South Carolina Upstate, died on Sunday at Greenville Memorial Hospital, according to the coroner.

Fire Chief Charlie King said around 7:20 p.m., Oconee County 911 services received a call in regards to a drowning at YMCA Beach on Lake Hartwell. Callers told 911 a male jumped off the edge of a dock and didn't resurface.

Within seven minutes, King said firefighters and paramedics from Oconee County and Clemson University arrived on scene and pulled Gaither from the water.

Gaither was transported to Oconee Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he later died.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Sawney Creek Baptist Church in Ridgeway. Burial will follow in Fairfield Community Cemetery in Winnsboro.

A visitation will be held from 2 - 7 p.m. Thursday at Nelson's Funeral Home in Ridgeway and again at 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
