SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials say old dynamite found inside an abandoned shed has been disposed.

Keowee Fire Department responded Monday to Doug Hollow Road in Seneca after a property owner found dynamite in an old abandoned work shed, according to a written statement.

It's unknown how long the dynamite had been stored there, but due to its age and potential danger, firefighters requested assistance from an explosives team from Anderson County.

Explosives experts "determined that the safest course of action would be to burn the small shed down which would render the dynamite safe," according to the statement

People who lived within 1,500 feet of the workshop were told to shelter in place.

"This was a high risk low frequency event for us. Fortunately, we had the time to properly create a plan, organize resources, consult explosives experts, protect adjacent structures, and render the dynamite safe. I appreciate the overwhelming support from every agency who worked with us today," Keowee Fire Chief Ritchie Caudill said.
