PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Starr Stancil said her dog named Captain went missing on July 4th, scared off by fireworks.

"It's scary," Stancil said. "I wonder is she eating, drinking."

Stancil, a staff sergeant in the National Guard, met Captain during a deployment to Kuwait in 2012.

"I found her chewing the lid of my bottle of water," Stancil said. "She got it off and drank the water."

Soldiers are not allowed to keep strays as pets Stancil said but Captain refused to leave and eventually won her heart.

"When it was time to leave the thought of leaving her behind was not something I wanted to do," said Stancil.

With the help of a dog rescue Stancil was able to bring the golden retriever-lab mix home to Anderson.

"I know she is a survivor, I know that," Stancil said of why she refuses to give up hope on finding Captain.

Stancil said Captain does have a microchip and is wearing a purple collar.

Anyone with information on Captain can call Starr Stancil at 864-367-4517 a reward is being offered for her return.
