Spin-a-thon to benefit Upstate nurse hurt while helping others

Posted: Updated:

A 12-hour spin-a-thon will be held Saturday to benefit the Gordon family.

The fundraiser is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Hub Fitness at 315 S. Main St. in Travelers Rest. A $10 donation will get you a 30-minute cycle. Organizers say people can cycle as little or as much as they’d like, but they suggest signing up in advance to reserve a bike.

In addition to cycling, food vendors and a massage therapist will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. taking donations for massages.

Vanessa Wright Gordon, a nurse for more than 20 years, was crushed by a car in June after she stopped to help a driver who had flipped his car on Highway 25 near Gap Creek Road in Greenville County. While helping him, another car hydroplaned and crashed into her, pinning her between their car and hers.

“I was crushed from the pelvis down," Gordon said.

She said her pelvis and left side of her femur were reconstructed. Gordon's left knee and both of her lower legs were shattered.

After spending nearly a month in the hospital and undergoing multiple surgeries, Gordon was released. But she has a long road to recovery.

All proceeds from Saturday’s event will go to the Gordon family to help with expenses. Gordon, a mother of three, says the community’s support has meant the world.

“Everything that seems to be happening where the community steps in turns into blessing other people. God has just been so good in this,” Gordon said.
