Lawyer: Mom wrongly accused of faking child's illness, kids taken away

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Spartanburg Co. couple is pleading with the DSS to return their four children after the mother was suspected of medical child abuse against her youngest son.

The attorney for Danielle and Williams Headley said their four sons were taken away three weeks ago, including the youngest, who has a fatty acid deficiency.

The attorney said DSS and Spartanburg Co. deputies suspect the mother has a mental illness called Munchausen by proxy, a sickness where a parent or caregiver fakes or exaggerates a child's symptoms and sicknesses.

Anderson attorney Donald Smith said those claims are unfounded, given the boy's medical history which is backed up by medical records.

"Unfortunately, the reaction was rather swift and I'm not sure that it was done with all the facts," said Smith. "These kids have never, never been apart from their parents."

Spartanburg Co. deputies are investigating, DSS would not comment on the case.

Smith said a DSS hearing may happen within the next 60 days. Until then, he said the children will remain in DSS custody.
