MOORE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

After more than four decades in business, Nivens' Apple Farm in Spartanburg County says 2015 will be their last season.

To understand why their time at the farm is coming to an end, owners Don and Katherine Nivens say we must start their story at the beginning.

"I was going to Clemson. I met her and that was the best thing that ever happened to me. And she made me promise that I'd never buy a farm,” said Don Nivens.

But in 1974, Katherine said she agreed to let Don purchase and open Nivens' Apple Farm, but under one condition.

“She said only if you build me a house in two years," said Don. "I promised I’d build her a house, but financially things didn’t go in that direction then."

Now, forty-one years later, Don says he’s finally making a promise he can keep.

"Now I'm promising that we're going to retire this year," said Don.

Don and Katherine both agree it will be a sad when they walk away from the farm, but Don who turns 82-years-old this October, says he and Katherine just can't keep up with it anymore. He says he hopes visitors from over the years will always think fondly of their memories at the farm and not be upset with them.

He says once retired, he plans to take his wife on a trip.

"We've got a motor home we've owned for four years we haven't been able to go anywhere so we're going to take advantage of the situation."

Don says the farm is currently for sale listed at $1.2 million.
