100 Deadly Days of Summer comes to an end

Posted: Updated:

Highway Patrol said there has been a spike in fatalities across the state of South Carolina.  Monday was also the last day of their '100 deadly days of summer' campaign.

Greenville and Spartanburg County were ranked as two of the highest in the state for traffic fatalities, and just this year alone, South Carolina has had over 600 traffic related deaths. As Labor Day Weekend comes to an end Highway Patrol said they were targeting drivers who were drinking and driving, not wearing seatbelts, and going over the speed limit.

"We want everybody to have a safe holiday during this labor day holiday period, we'll be out trying to enforce the laws, we wanna make it safe for you if you see a drunk driver or a wreckless driver we'd like for you to dial *HP," said Captain Michael Warren with Highway Patrol.

Warren said there are a few simple steps to safer driving. "What we're trying to do is get a consciousness of  the drivers out here, number one... don't drink and drive if you're going to an event where you will be drinking, we advise you have a designated driver."

Warren said one drink is too many if you plan to get behind the wheel, and drivers have their own ideas on what leads to unsafe driving on our highways.

"You have to slow down, you have to watch out for the other guy, I mean if you're just driving around and puting around, you're gonna get run over," said Pete Altman who drives to Greenville weekly.

Altman said he has had many close calls when driving on South Carolina Interstates,"People hitting the breaks cause they're talking on their phone and not paying attention."

In Greenville County as of August 31st, there have already been 43 deaths, in Spartanburg County 47 and at the top of the list, Horry County had 53.
