WILLIAMSTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Amid tension between police and the public nationally, Williamston Police have gotten ten new body cameras.

The cameras are part of a trial phase by the department to help officers document traffic stops and other incidents more accurately. Law enforcement in other upstate jurisdictions already have body cameras, and Williamston is the latest to add them.

Chief Tony Taylor said the cameras will ensure that there is no mistaking what goes on during police encounters.

"This is a protection for the officers and also for the community as well," Chief Taylor said. "So when these officers have these body cameras on, they're going to be professional, they're going to be courteous and they are going to do their job."

Chief Taylor said there may be more body cameras purchased if this trial phase continues to be successful.
