South Carolina ranks No. 1 for women murdered by men

Posted: Updated:

A new study from a criminal domestic violence awareness group has found South Carolina at the top of the list for women murdered by men in the United States for the 18th year in a row.

The Violence Policy Center released the results of the study on Tuesday and found 2.32 women are murdered by men for every 100,000 people in the Palmetto State.

“Several states including South Carolina have recently taken important steps to keep guns out of the hands of abusers,” said VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand in a release. “Yet in the face of these alarming statistics, more needs to be done at the federal and state levels to protect women from abuse and prevent future tragedies.”

The release continued and said the most common weapon used in this type of crime is a gun.

South Carolina lawmakers reformed the state's criminal domestic violence laws during the last legislative session. The law includes harsher penalties for offenders, a gun ban -- with some offenses earning a lifetime ban -- and education for middle school students about domestic violence. Gov. Nikki Haley has pushed for further reforms.

Alaska, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Nevada round out the top five on the list.
