GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A former Greenville County teacher accused of injuring a child faces a criminal charge.

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office has charged Kathy Higgins Gilliam, 56, with third-degree assault and battery.

Gilliam grabbed and pulled the victim's ear on Sept. 22, according to an arrest warrant.

The charge stems from an investigation that deputies launched in September after a parent claimed that a former Fuller Normal School injured her son at school.

According to its website, Fuller Normal School is a faith-based early childhood school that serves 3 and 4-year-old children.

Olga Arnold told FOX Carolina that a teacher pinched and slapped her son in the eye.

Master Deputy Michael McGaha with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a parent reported the alleged assault to her child.

“The incident was documented and forwarded to an investigator,” McGaha said.

He said after the parent sent out a Facebook message, several upset parents showed up at the school on Sept. 23.

“This is an ongoing investigation in the initial phase.  The Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a thorough investigation with this and every case,” McGaha said at the time. “Investigations can be time consuming with information coming in at different times.

“The Sheriff’s Office will not jump to a conclusion based on an allegation without conducting a proper investigation even if it does not meet someone’s personal demands,” McGaha said.

Fuller Normal School president Patrick Frazier said the teacher was terminated following the allegations.

Frazier said the S.C. Department of Social Services and other agencies were contacted, per the school's policy.

Frazier said school officials also considered it was necessary to inform parents about the alleged incident.

“We are in the business of giving children the best education possible. We love our students and don’t want any harm to come to them, by anyone," Frazier told FOX Carolina.

Gilliam is expected to be released from jail on a bond Monday evening. Her next court appearance is scheduled Dec.2.
