BOSTIC, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said a man who was taken into custody after a 20-hour standoff with law enforcement was transported to the detention center on Tuesday.

Bryan Keith Houser, 44, was discharged from Mission Health where he received care for the last two weeks, according to deputies.

Deputies said Houser was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official and Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm after a standoff at his home on North Fork Road in Bostic on Sept. 20.

Sheriff Chris Francis said Houser stabbed his 75-year-old father and held him inside the home. The father was able to escape and a passing driver took him to the hospital, where Francis said the elderly man was treated for minor cuts to the head and hands.

When deputies arrived, Francis said Houser fired shots at them using a high-powered rifle.

Deputies took cover and were pinned in place until back-up and SWAT arrived at the scene. More shots were fired and nearby homes were evacuated.

Francis said deputies were able to make contact with the suspect via telephone and had several conversations before Houser stopped communicating.

Crews used loud speakers and gas to try to prompt the man to come out of the home but Francis said Houser remained inside for nearly 20 hours.

Houser was believed to have been under the influence of drugs, likely methamphetamine or a similar substance, Francis said.

Multiple local police departments were called in to assist and an incident command center at Fairview Baptist Church.

Just before 8 a.m. a deputy confirmed to FOX Carolina's crew at the command center that the suspect had been taken into custody.

Francis later confirmed that Houser was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries and to be mentally evaluated.

Houser is being held under a $70,000 secured bond. Deputies said he will go before a District Court Judge on Wednesday.
