No safety reflectors on stretch of Highway 28 concerns drivers

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Some drivers in Anderson County are not happy about the lack of safety reflectors on a recently reconstructed stretch of Highway 28.

It's a highly traveled road that the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) said they completed work on in August.

But drivers said they are still waiting for the safety strips to be installed, although they said the condition of the road has improved.

"It was a lot narrower, now you can actually fit two cars going down it and an 18 wheeler," Chris Phillips said.

Phillips works and lives off Highway 28. He said he's happy with the changes, but said others feel differently.

"I think it's really unsafe because they haven't put the reflectors back down. Especially when it's raining you can't see going down there at night because the road is so dark," said Timmie Drawdy who is concerned about the roads.

People said they are most concerned about driving at night.

SCDOT said they started reconstructing the nine-mile stretch of road in April because it was in bad shape. An engineer for SCDOT said the original road was torn up, mixed in with new concrete, and then new asphalt pavement was placed on top.

"A bunch of people that goes to work, they have to drive on it before daylight and it's real unsafe," Drawdy said.

The SCDOT just put up guard rails and rumble stripes along the edge of the road. Reflectors will be put in place next.

"I'm not really understanding what everyone's fussing about, you can actually see now, and if it rains and stuff like that... Aren't you supposed to slow down anyway," Phillips said.

SCDOT said contractors should put the reflectors on the roads by the end of this week, and if not, they will install them next week.
