A Greenville veteran and mother of two is grateful that she and her family have a new home thanks to the United Way and Homes for Hope.

Homes for Hope has helped families find safe, permanent homes in the area for 17 years, agency officials said.

Jennifer Calandra said that the United Way put her in touch with Homes for Hope after she sought help in 2014 after bullets from a gang shootout were fired into her daughter’s bedroom.

Calandra said her divorce and an illness had left her out of work and that she and her children were living in an income-based apartment when the shooting happened.

The United Way put Calandra in touch with its partner agencies that helped her get into transitional housing and eventually into a permanent home earlier this year.

“I appreciate the opportunity to live in a new home... to live in a safe neighborhood... an environment where my kids can grow up,” Calandra said.

Calandra, her new husband, and two children live in the Kingsview neighborhood in West Greenville. The neighborhood created by Homes of Hope features tree lined streets, a community garden, and the most important amenity for Calandra - safety.

Homes for Hope has helped more than 500 families find new homes.

The United Way is in the middle of its 2015 fundraiser.

Officials say funds raised will allow the organization and its partner agencies to continue to assist families in need in the area.

Donations can be made by texting “UWGC” to 41444.
