Son continues father's tradition of collecting bikes for kids in Greenville

Children ask for many different things this time of year, but for some their families aren't always able to make their wishes come true.

"I just made it my mission something simple, just to make sure every kid wakes up with something under the tree," said Jay Anderson.

A Christmas tradition, once started by a father, is now continued by his son.

"He passed the torch to me and so now I'm taking it as far as I can," said Anderson.

Jay Anderson grew up watching his dad, Joel bring bikes to families just before Christmas.

"As we got older I started riding with him and you know he would show me.. kids are not as privileged and we'd hand them out," said Anderson.

The Andersons collect bikes that are donated by businesses throughout Greenville.

"It's a great feeling just seeing the little kids smile," said Anderson.

Anderson said every year he wanted a bike growing up and hopes to pass that joy of having one to a younger generation: "That's what we went with, that's what we're gonna stick with so... it's a tradition and it hasn't been broken yet, so we're just gonna keep going with it."

A flag football tournament will be held at the Caine Halter YMCA on Sunday. In order to play, the teams will be donating bikes for kids in the community.

If you are interested in donating a bike for a child in Greenville, you can bring them to the tournament or contact Joel Anderson at
